LONG TERM CARE
You protect yourself and your family with auto and homeowners
insurance. Long-term care insurance protects against a far greater
threat. The odds of a car accident are 70 in 1,000 at an average loss of
$3,000. But the odds you will need long-term care are 600 in 1,000. The
average loss is somewhere between $50,000 and $80,000 per year.
The American Health Care Association warns that failure to prepare
for the cost of long-term care is the primary cause of impoverishment
among the elderly. Use this site to learn a little about long-term care
insurance, and find out if you or someone you love is at risk.
What is Long
Term Care?
When a chronic condition sets in, people often need assistance --
from occasional help with household chores such as cooking and cleaning,
to around-the-clock nursing care. Long-term care doesn't have to take
place in a nursing home -- in many cases it can be provided in the
patient's home. Services vary widely in degree and cost, depending on
one's condition, needs and environment.
Be aware that long-term care is not the same as medical, or acute,
care and that it is often NOT covered by standard medical insurance.
Acute care is provided in a hospital for a short time, with the
intention of making the patient better. Long-term care is provided to
people with chronic or degenerative illnesses who require support over a
longer period of time.
Individuals may need long-term care when a chronic condition limits
their ability to maintain themselves or their households.
